Chapter 28 – An Army of 100 Lord Class Monsters Approaches!

“What is this……?”

Kein was following the mountain path he usually used while herb hunting, but for some reason there was large amount of Goblin Lords and Orc Lords corpses scattered about. He had never encountered this before while gathering herbs.

The scene, ripped straight out of hell, wasn’t normal in the slightest. Kein became cautious and pulled the mithril sword at his hip out, keeping it ready for any sudden movements.

A noise emerged abruptly from some grass nearby.

“GuooOOO”

“Uwah!”

A huge Ogre Lord lunged out at him, straight toward the tip of his outheld sword, cutting his head off and dying.

There was no way that the D rank adventurer Kein would have be able to defeat such a monster.

It seemed that somehow, the monster had been almost dead to begin with.

“What in the world is going on?”

In Kein’s mind, the shadow of the monster that came from this hellish scene still lingered, and he shuddered.

There is nothing scarier than a threat you can’t even see.

“Uwah, again!?”

Without carelessly letting his guard down his sword was still held out, and now an Orc Lord had collapsed onto it. It was also near death so it went down easily.

The area was full of monsters in this state, so this pattern repeated many times over. It made Kein quite tired.

‘Thank god’ Kein said. He finally reached the meeting spot halfway up the mountain, where there was a small log cabin. Someone was crouched down low, waiting there.

A figure that looked like a fallen warrior came into view. He had many arrows lodged into his back, and his hair had been singed black. It was the hero Abel, who had previously been quite proud of his blue hair.

“W-what happened Abel-kun!?”

Kein said, flustered. He rushed up toward him.

The other members of his party were resting there as well. They were all injured, though none as bad as Abel was.

Kurtz, the mage with coke bottle glasses, was sitting. He sighed and said,

“We ran into so much trouble, so many traps, and have thoroughly suffered for it. That’s why I told you to turn back!”

The black robe he wore was in terrible shape. He looked like he had encountered something truly awful.

The female thief Kisara, who had always been sunny and laughing, now seemed utterly dejected.

“I knew it ever since that log fell down and came at us, but then… Huge boulders rolled at us! Arrows were flying! Somehow there was an explosion! We even fell into a pitfall, something wasn’t right! Abel who was at the head of the party got beat up the worst!!”

Probably due to her high evasion as a thief, Kisara was the only one without a single scratch.

“……Kein-san, even despite all that I did it!”

Abel, though quite unsteady was proud of his success, and held out three heads that dangled from his hand: a Goblin Lord, Orc Lord and Ogre Lord’s head.

Even though everyone had been telling him to stop, the heroic leader Abel took the craggy road on foot. He passed through a number of traps and defeated a lot of small fry goblins, but still successfully obtained the three heads, exactly as the quest stated.

I was impressed by his will power.

“So then, how did Kein-san do?”

“No, well actually.”

Just as Kein answered Kisara’s question, the giant figure of an Ogre King emerged from the shadow of the forest.

“KyaaAAA!”

The female thief Kisara screamed.

The Ogre King barged out faster than everyone could ready themselves, and he headed toward Kein and Kisara.

“Uwah!”

He headed towards them, and then collapsed onto them.

Kein had suspected this and was already used to the pattern. He half unconciously stuck out his mithril sword toward the Ogre King, piercing his chest.

Kein then forced the huge body back and the Ogre King slumped down to the ground, the same as the rest. He was also practically dead from the start.

“What a day I’ve had today.”

He had still been surprised.

“Kein-san, thank you for saving us. You really are mature and wonderfully reliable.”

“No, it was just……”

The blue haired female thief Kisara, with her big, round, greenish blue eyes sparkling, embraced Kein.

Before Kein could tell her that he didn’t do anything, the mage Kurtz’s coke bottle glasses glinted in the light and he explained.

“Wow, that’s an Ogre King, isn’t it? A man-eating ruler of the Ogres. This is an A rank monster, higher than even the Goblin King from before. That was quite the feat, Kein-san.”

Abel used his own prized fallen star sword as a cane, and wobbily made his way over.

“Abel, you’re so slow! Kein-san is a wonderful man, you should try to imitate him sometime.”

Kisara was unexpectedly harsh toward Abel, who was covered head to toe with wounds.

“Shut up. Damnit, you know even if I wasn’t injured…… wait, what!? I only saw one stroke of his sword, but somehow he chopped off both of his arms at the same time? I’ve heard rumours about this kind of thing, a three stage slash!?”

Abel checked over the corpse and made a fuss. Both of the deceased Ogre King arms had been severed close to the body.

Kein became flustered and denied it.

“No, from the very beginning his arms were already like that.”

“Don’t say that Kein-san. Even if it’s me, the famous fallen star swordsman. Seeing a vivid wound like that, I know it wasn’t caused by the power of mithril sword alone. It was made by an amazing skill, better than Snakehead’s duel wielding technique.”

“No, that’s why……”

Kein wanted to say ‘Just what did you see, I didn’t cut anything to begin with.’ However, seeing Abel covered in wounds and with his clothes in tatters, he looked pitiful. He decided not to respond harshly.

“Fufu, how interesting. There’s still a lot of swordsmen stronger than me out there in the world.”

Despite never having left Erun city, the young hero Abel spoke as if he understood.

It seems his wounds were too severe, and he almost fainted.

“You already knew that Abel-kun. For now, let me treat your wounds.

Kein always went at his own pace, and even at a time like this, he had managed to pick some herbs. He started to diligently treat Abel’s and all the party member’s wounds.

“I’m sorry, Kein-san. As the comet chasing hero Abel, I promise I will repay this debt!”

“Abel-kun. I know, so please just rest for a bit.”

He put Abel in the log cabin to rest for a while. Very carefully, he extracted the arrows from his back and treated his numerous wounds.

This is what you should expected from an A class hero. Kein was impressed that he had been able to walk while injured this badly.

“Everyone, something’s happened! On the road that Kein used to get here, there’s a huge amount of dead Lord class monsters!”

Just to be sure, Kisara had scouted the path they would return on later, and then created another commotion.

Abel who was still having his wounds treated, smirked.

“It’s only natural if Kein-san is around. I’ve found a really good rival.”

“Their dead bodies only fell on the road, I didn’t really do anything……”

Despite Kein’s explanation, nobody bought it.

They returned to the Adventurer’s Guild, where they reported that over 100 Lord class monsters, as well as an Ogre King had been taken down.

“I wasn’t me who did it, the dead bodies were scattered around in the first place!”

“It’s alright, Kein-san. I alone understand all too well what happened. Even if the guild won’t, I support your opinion, Kein-san.”

Elena, the Adventurer Guild’s receptionist, knew all about the circumstances.

She frantically grabbed onto Kein’s arm, and wondered if she could keep quiet still.

Elena thought ‘who do those damn kids think they are, making me do as they please?’ She steeled her resolve.

“It would be helpful if Elena-san could explain it to me.”

“Kein-san. The truth is that on that mountain, a monster even scarier than the Ogre King is lurkin– hyiii–“

That ‘scarier monster’ was hiding in the shadow of a pillar, and glared sharply at Elena.

The ‘monster of the mountain’ mouthed ‘If you say any more than that……’ then made a gesture, moving her finger in a sharp line against her neck.

Elena turned pale and sank down to the floor. Kein helped her back up.

“Elena-san, are you okay?”

“Yeah. Anyways, the A rank party, the “Comet Chasers” defeated 3 Lord class monsters and a great number of Goblins. The reward money will be given to Kein-san. Because there are so many individual bounties, I estimate it to be roughly 480 gold.”

“I didn’t exactly defeat them by myself, so aside from the amount for the herb hunting, I can’t accept it.”

“I thought that you’d say that, Kein-san. However, even if you just pick up a corpse, that awards you the rights to it.”

There were many surprises that day, but because of it, many of the violent monsters on the mountain had been exterminated.

When Kein stopped to think about who might’ve been responsible for it all, he suddenly thought of the god of the mountain.

“That’s right, then that means……”  He should probably give all of it to the mountain god.

In the end, Kein decided to reward Kuko Village, who had created that wonderful shrine for the mountain god. Once again, he sent the money to them anonymously.

  1. Error?
the heroic leader Abel took the craggy road on food. -> the heroic leader Abel took the craggy road on foot.

    Thanks for the treat.

  2. the joke is starting to grow, specially with Kein acting like a doormat and just accepting the praise without actually trying to resolve the issue.

    1. How could he? Only thing he can do is deny his involvement – so long as he himself doesn’t know who’s responsible, he cannot just go to Anastrea and tell her to give it a rest.

      1. Questioning the heroics of the good natured Kein isn’t healthy.
Look at what happened to poor Abel & his party. They only made a friendly challenge and barely survived it.
The poor guild receptionist lives in terror of her life because she knows about the Yandere monster creating all this havic in his name.
        Lol
        Thanks for the chapter
